CD Review: Dying Fetus – “Wrong One To Fuck With” (2017 Relapse Records)

Don’t even know where to start with on this release. If you are familiar with Dying Fetus then you know what these guys bring to the table. Extreme, insanity, and most importantly new material for you to dive into the pit with. Dying Fetus put together this release to show that they are on top of their game and to show where they are in their own development of their music.  Whether or not that is the case you get that anyways!  We got to listen to this new release “Wrong One To Fuck With” and what we experienced is more of an musical awakening. We figured we’d get John with his growls and the typical signature death metal guitar riffs, and Trey’s outstanding drumming in this release. That’s a give in. But when we actually sat down and listened to this release in it entirety this is what we discovered.

Opening track “Fixated on Devastation” delivers what I can only think of as if you took a jump out of the empire state building and on your way down to slamming face first into the concrete you slid down on one of the worlds largest cheese grater and just demolished your whole-being. This is blistering, and destructive.  This is how you start a new release off.  Classic DF and Trey totally destroys, “I feel sorry for his snare and bass drum!” The breakdowns are powerful and will definitely be a great track to perform live. Once you are coming down from the devastation of the first track you are thrown right into the mix of “Panic Amongst the Herd” which is a groovy thrashy track and hits you right upside the head.  The movement of this song is fast paced from verse to chorus, and Sean, John and Trey shred it out. Its insane! Well you get to take a break when “Die With Integrity” plows in next. Such a great groove and powerful mix. Ok, so you got exactly 1 minute of a groove break until all hell breaks loose!  Gallagher is really impressive in this song with his riffing/solo’s. “Reveling In The Abyss” is a straight up ass whipper of a song and you can quote me on this! Classic DF vibe in this one, great timing of squeals and Trey is unrelentless. The metal gods definitely put him on this planet to leave you in awe when he plays. This release is what you’d expect to get from this trio. Sometimes it is hard to believe that its just a trio laying down the devastation. The title track “Wrong One To Fuck With” is an instant classic with all the meat in it for you to take to war with you when you throw your fists and elbows into the pit. Can picture this one going over great live and circle pits everywhere, even in the parking lots!

Overall: Dying Fetus – “Wrong One To Fuck With” is probably one of their best releases to date. They have progressed in their writing abilities and musicianship. I think that I was more blown away by the drums than anything else. Knowing that I have to give this release a 9.5 / 10 on the “this release kicked my ass” scale!

Thanks for taking a few seconds to read this. I have been with MTRS since its inception. Love doing the live broadcasts and interviewing my hero’s and other very interesting people over the decade of this. MTR is my therapy. Have always looked at this site and station as being part of the solution for the artists. We have NEVER pushed our own agenda, it has always been in the name of the bands, the music and the direction in which we have an influence in helping. We are part of the solution. Its simple! We are here to help bands and entertainers succeed. We go way far beyond of what is expected of a station/PR piece.
