CD Review: Life of Agony – A Place Where There’s No More Pain (2017 Napalm Records)

By: Dom Rini

Cutting through the chase let’s get down to business on this new release by Life Of Agony.  “A Place Where There’s No More Pain.” When a band takes a break or a hiatus coming back from that is pretty tough. But Life of Agony does not seem to have done this. What this band did was recharge their batteries and deliver a knock-out blow with their latest release.  Mina is on top with this one. Vocally, this release is a masterpiece even without the other elements of the other members contribution. This release is really catchy, easy to fall feel the vibe and the pocket of the entire release.

The title track “A Place Where There’s No More Pain” really sets the stage for the entire release, it may be an upbeat song by lyrically it hits you right in the heart. This release has covered so much ground in stretching their musical abilities. Opening this release with “Meet My Maker” shows the creativeness that is put into this one and you know this is going to be a helluva release.  Mina’s voice is at its best, to hear that check out the song “Dead Speak Kindly”  and “Right this Wrong.”  This release is a cornucopia of harmony, heavy guitars, pounding drums and vocally superior.  Great use of harmonizing and overdubbing vocals. Great emphasizing on the melodic phrasing throughout. “World Gone Mad” is a sweet upbeat/tempo track that should help put them back on the mainstream map.  Hooky, catchy and a really sweet track.  “Bag of Bones” gives you that down-tuning vibe of evilness, but it is cleverly masked. Mina shines in this one, a really nice breakdown as well. “Walking Catastrophe“ is a really sweet song, great melody lines. “Song For The Abused” delivers a different type of song, it stands out in this release. Its not a bad thing at all, it has its own feel to it. Closing out “A Place Where There’s No More Pain” is “Little Spots Of You” which gives you a dramatic ending of piano and Mina.

Overall: 9/10  If you were a fan of Life of Agony in the past, than you are in for a treat on this one. The band is extremely tight, lyrically and vocally a masterpiece, Alan does a great job and really tackles the blood thirst grooving side, Sal really shines on this one and Joey Z riffs it up big time!  It is full of a lot of messages, melody lines that keep you moving along with the release and you’ll find yourself hitting rewind on these.  I am really digging this and will keep in on high rotation. I am sure once I listen to it a good 20 times I will really be into it. Give “A Place Where There’s No More Pain” a chance to shine with your collection and play it LOUD!

Using the famed River Runs Red lineup featuring vocalist Mina Caputo, guitarist Joey Z, bassist Alan Robert, and drummer Sal Abruscato are excited to take the stage together once again this Spring.

CD Review – Bloodbound – War Of Dragons (2017 AFM Records)

Bloodbound is back with another spectacular release. The Swedish onslaught brings to the fore-front an extremely powerful release that continues the power metal crusade that they have been doing sing the mid 2000’s. Garnering a large fan base with their powerful music and memorable live performances have made this band one of the premiere bands’ to thrive.

“War of Dragons” delivers everything you have grown to love about Bloodbound. The melodic lines throughout this release and the guitar shredding captivates the listeners and keeps you listening. It indeed continues with that European power metal style. It is a pretty sweet release that is far from wimpy. It delivers, it really does. Vocally  Selleby is on top of his game and really pulls the music together. Lyrically alone “War of Dragons” is an instant classic.  This release takes you on a journey and the lyrics are outstanding and stands out.  The Olsson’s do such a great job of pulling the trigger on setting the world on fire with the guitars. Fredrik Bergh on keyboards really stands out on this release. “King of Swords” really reflects this notion. Plus its one of the heaviest tracks on it.

If you are up against the wall on Bloodbound and have not heard of them you need to take a chance on these guys.

CD Review – Sainted Sinners – Sainted Sinners (2017 El Puerto Records Gbr)

Ready for some fresh new music to come your way? Are you into the sound of classic Whitesnake, Rainbow, and Deep Purple? Well, these guys put together an outstanding release that will pull you into them. I am talking about the band Sainted Sinners. Fronted with former Accept vocalist David Reece and a great back-lining artist bring the self titled release to the fore-front which is produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy).  Few of the tracks on this release are powerful, especially with the strong blues influence. It is indeed a guitarist band. Riff after riff and the vocals really bring it full circle.

The most powerful song on this release is “We’re All Sainted Sinners.” Think this song captivates the entire feeling of this release. It has the strength of the vocals as well as the hooky chorus and riff completes it.  “Knight Of The Long Knives” is a classic track that really sets the stage for what to expect, complete with that Rainbow vibe and the lyrics are powerful and chorus is full of catchy juiciness.  “Beauty In The Beast” has a groovy upbeat rhythm to it that makes you want to move around where you are and does not let down. “Blue Lightning Man” sheds that southern swampy vibe, and clean rockin’ upbeat song. Pretty cool to listen to the buildup of the song. Vocally one of the better tracks on this release. “In Need” ah back to the bluesy vibe and the talk about the hard times. Definitely has a ZZ Top feel to it, which is a good thing.

This release is really colorful. Has alot of feeling, expression and lyrically and vocally a masterpiece. It is a really “groove” oriented release and a throw-back kinda vibe. It is a nice feeling release. There are no downsides on this one.

“I feel a very strong sense of pride! I feel it’s a great representation of who I and we are”, summarizes DAVID REECE, who calls the eleven tracks colorful. “Concerning the logistic distance between everybody and the fact that we just started as a band, it’s a very promising debut with many albums to follow”, rejoices FRANK PANÉ. And it becomes obvious, that »Sainted Sinners« is the beginning of a new, exciting hard rocking fairytale.

So if you are looking for something fresh but with that older vibe to it you need to check these guys out and grab this release when it comes out. You will be really satisfied.

Words That Burn – REGRET IS FOR THE DEAD (2016)

Yes, these bad asses are back at it again! This time the rain has soaked in the ground and everyone had the opportunity to delve deep into their last release “Praey” and it was a success. Words That Burn drew much international attention from their debut and took the time and dedication to follow it up with their latest effort “Regret is For the Dead.”

Overall: 9.5/10Regret is For The Dead” the new release and the vibe is strong and it pulls you in and captivates you.  This release does this to a “T.”  Give this release a few spins and understanding the vibe of the overall; this CD clearly does it. “Regret is For The Dead”, “is like getting your skull smashed in by a speeding truck side-swiping it!”

My favorite tracks on this release are “Unalive“, “Scars” and “In This Moment,” “Hush“, it is really hooky, great drive and power driven vocally as well as musically. As with this release each track is melodically driven and delivers the punch and does not let down. These guys have got to be great to see live. Especially when they perform their newer material.  If you are looking for something fresh and new sounding check out these guys Words That Burn and grab this release today!

CD Review: INDOMINUS – “Legion Within” (2016 Roxx Records)

indominusINDOMINUS – “Legion Within” release is pretty easy to get a feeling of it. “This release sounds like a nuclear holocaust of mass proportion.”  If you think that INDOMINUS just released a CD that was wimpy or had some filler tracks on it, you would be sadly mistaken. This 5 song release features destruction in every song.

Backbone” sets the stage for this release. It is just a straight up ass-whoopin’ song. Heavy as hell and keeps you in the loop of the song. “Fragile Existence” is the continuation the destruction.  This track is powerful. There is some really sick riffs on this release that you need to hear, as in the song “Leeches” which will make you think “what the hell is he doing.” It is powerful and the vocals are extremely strong, the chorus is pretty hooky which is a great feeling and keeps the vibe alive. I enjoyed the chugging in the song, had that Exodus feel to it. The title track “Legion Within” has that European riffing intro and heavy dropped down pounding squeals. The guitar seems to be in a different realm than the rest of the band which is a great thing. He is playing the melody line over the pounding. Vocally, just hearing him sing (scream) really starts to scare the listener. Such an evil vibe in this track. Heavy as hell and scary as all hell as well, killer little solo in this song as well. Closing the release is “Shadow.” This is a moshing masterpiece, great vibe and chugging. Really feeling this song. Nice melodic guitar driven lines through this song as well. I highly recommend you diving in a letting this song soak in.

Overall: INDOMINUS – “Legion Within” comes in as straight up ass-whoopin or a bat to the skull. You can’t go wrong with these guys. If you are looking for something heavy, melodic and unrelentless you need to get a hold of these cats and really dive into this cauldron of chaos. 4/5 Horns!

CD Review – DEAD LABEL – Throne of Bones (2016 Nuerra Records)

dltobIf you are looking for something heavy as hell, melodic and something new to dive into than look no further. DEAD LABEL has put out this killer release called “Throne of Bones.” This release packs a punch right to the gut and keeps you pulled into them.

“Throne of Bones” gives you that vicious metalcore vocals and music that reminds you of a Lamb of God. It is extremely intense but not hard enough that you don’t know what is going on. The points that I caught on right off the back was the strength in the drums and guitar mix. “Claire is a monster on the cannons.” And you can quote me on this one! The thing I enjoy about listening to the songs is how strong the chemistry is between the members it does not seem to slack in any department at all. It’s equally brutal and really catchy.

The title track “Throne of Bones” sets the stage of the release giving you that punch in the face. It definitely lets you know this is not a sissy CD. “Salvation in Sacrifice” starts off  dramatically but then it delivers the power that DEAD LABEL is known for.  This track is pretty catchy and hooky, the guitars are right on track and keeps this song moving, nice little solo in there. “Ominous” has a nice build up to the verse, pretty spooky track. Really interesting lyrics in this one.  I think I got a bit scared listening to this one! “The Birth of Suffering”, man I am such a sucker for songs that start off with acoustic guitars that actually sound sweet. The song bleeds into the verse and is a smooth melodic hard hitting rhythm and the vocals just swell into it providing the push of the greatness of this track. There is a pretty sweet breakdown in this song and the buildup is destructive! “The Cleansing”, ah another pretty sweet intro, almost like a R&B vibe to it, I was thinking of having a night cap when this started playing. It is a nice break from the madness before this. Its may be instrumental but it did not lose me, it really absorbed me. “Exhume The Venom” back to the heaviness. This track goes right for your throat and the lyrics tells you that! An ass whippin’ kinda song.  “Void” brings the heavy back to the mix, this track has got to be played live and you can just picture the circle pits develop as this song continues. It is heavy, unrelentless and the drums just destroy. Closing out this phenomenal release is “The Gates of Hell,” that European flavor swells into this song, very heavy and melodic with piano taking this song into the next level.  The heavy melodic vibe is a great way to conclude this release as it kinda closes the story on this release encasing the madness and power in this song.

Overall: 9/10 from DEAD LABEL “Throne of Bones.” As stated throughout this release it is intense, powerful, the band chemistry is tight and it shows in every song.  The only thing I would loved to have heard is the guitarist expanding his prolific guitar style in the songs, in other words, solo’s. I love this release and look forward to listening more to this and really letting it soak in. Take a moment and seek this band out and make them part of your life!

The latest release by UK masters RavenEye breaks the mold with Nova. Shedding a refreshing sound to the current stale vibe out there.

Guess you can say this band and release has that sound that crosses a Soundgarden meets Crobot with a Sabbathy feel to it.  Great groove, great lyrics, vocally a masterpiece.  Track after track is completely different but yet is harmoniously in sinc.

About RavenEye

Since forming in 2014, the band has toured globally, supporting bands such as The Darkness, Slash, Deep Purple, Halestorm and Blues Pills. The band has headlined their own tours through Europe and America and have performed at major international rock festivals such as Download Festival (UK), Hellfest Open Air Festival (France), Azkena Rock Festival ARF (Spain), Rock For People (OFFICIAL) (Czech Republic), Louder Than Life (U.S.), and Aftershock Festival (U.S.), and will also perform at this year’s Maximus Festival in Brazil and Argentina this September.  Their incendiary live shows have captivated crowds and put them on the map as a ‘must see live’ band.

Warren Riker (Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, Down, Anders Osborne), who engineered the debut EP, took over as producer to capture the band’s true sonic identity on NOVA. Together, Oli Brown, Aussie bassist Aaron Spiers and renowned drummer Gunnar Olsen worked at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey for 25 days and created an eleven-track album that pushed the band beyond its boundaries and into new ground. From the hard hitting riffs of “Inside”, “Madeline” and “Hero” to the raw sounds of “Wanna Feel You” and “Oh My Love’ to the stark reality of life and death in “Eternity”, NOVA takes you on a journey of defiance, pain, hate, death and, yes, love. See below for links to two music video premieres of “Hero” and “Inside”:

Power-rock trio RavenEye was formed by multi-award winning guitarist/singer Oli Brown along with drummer Kev Hickman and bassist Aaron Spiers. Having already toured Spain, France and Italy, RavenEye has been slamming audiences with their signature heavy riffs and incendiary live show. Whether it be straddling a bass drum high into the night or jumping into a raucous crowd, RavenEye is a high-energy rock act not to be missed.

Oli Brown has spent 10 years touring the world under his own name and in that time released 4 albums and has established himself as one of the most formidable guitarists/front men in the UK scene. Kev Hickman has also seen his fair share of international touring, and with an unforgettable stage presence he has developed an intense, hi-octane performance. Aaron Spiers tore into the UK in 2012 and since then has established himself as a force to be reckoned with on stage, he’s also released several solo albums and written scores for orchestras in Australia.

After meeting and creating music together, they all knew that this would be their musical future, here begins RavenEye.

First of all, I feel guilty for not experiencing THE AGONIST before. When listening to songs off their new album ‘FIVE’ I was immediately struck by the power of this band, from Vicky Psarakis stunning earth-shaking vocals to the screaming guitars of Danny Marino and Pascal “Paco” Jobin.

For me, all I want out of my metal experience is for a band to hammer me right over the head with their sound and The Agonist seemed to have done that.

Designed to make it all the way to the top in the extreme metal scene with their fine-tuned mixture of melodic death metal and metal core. Five makes the elite status of the Canadian five piece even clearer, enforcing their goal to escape the mundane. Singer Vicky Psarakis’s joining of the group in 2014 only enhanced The Agonist`s knack for touching melodies (just give the lascivious ‘The Raven Eyes’ a whirl), and flirting with alternative rock became a habit. However there is still palpable aggression in the air, discharging in technical death metal solos, beastly growls and massive breakdowns. If you’re not on board the bandwagon by now, than you had better get on, because from here on out  THE AGONISTare only going to get better.

death-angel-the-evil-divide-artworkDeath Angel have always been that thrash band that is mistakenly left out of the biggest thrash bands debate that has seemingly gone on forever, while being the peoples champion with their undying cult like following. Since the live reformation in 2001, and the release of 2004’s “The Art of Dying”, the band has been a fine tuned machine of power and precision leveling anything that gets in their way. 2016 flips the switch, and sees the band prepping for total domination with the release of their eight studio offering “The Evil Divide”.

Los Angeles, Ca – Experimental rock band  Gone Is Gone  a “super group” comprised of highly revered musicians Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age), Tony Hajjar (At The Drive In) and Mike Zarin.

Their self-titled debut EP, “Gone Is Gone” available July 8th via Rise Records/Black Dune Records  is an expansive record that blends each of the musicians unique styles and influences. The sweeping balladry of ‘Stolen From Me’ proves this band is far more then just another super band that can hold their own amongst the biggest names in the rock scene.

Gone is Gone offers a dark, slightly more modern twist on this alternative rock sound. There are some Mastodon and Queens type influences here, but in attitude rather than imitation.  So well-constructed are , ‘Violescent’ and  ’Praying From The  Danger’ that they quickly feel familiar enough to have been alt-rock staples for years. And they’re not even the most striking parts.  ‘This Chapter’ shows they have a change of pace in their locker without foregoing the maudlin theatrics, adding another string to their bow and showing this band could become real contenders in 2016.

CoverComedian Jim Breuer is back with a new hard rockin’ metal CD and it will blow your mind. The latest release JIM BREUER AND THE LOUD & ROWDY SONGS FROM THE GARAGE is definitely something you are going to really enjoy diving into.

This release gives you all the fun and nutty experiences that Jim has been going through being a garage rocker. It’s sort of a concept CD with the idea of an older family guy who is rocker at heart and lives his childhood dreams of being a rockstar but the parts of being a dad and husband kind of holds his creativity back. So he unleashes it in his privacy and does what all rockin’ kids did, put the headphones on loud and just raise hell.

JIM BREUER AND THE LOUD & ROWDY SONGS FROM THE GARAGE was produced by Rob Caggiano, the famed guitarist (ex Anthrax / and current Volbeat). Caggiano really made this record top notch and you can tell that he was striving for perfection on this one. A grammy winner helps Breuer to make this album a historic classic. Be it a comedy record but it sounds great. So it sort of takes it to a different level. This release would be great to be in rotation on your iPod or whatever with Steel Panther.  The music is phenomenal, lyrically Breuer pulls a masterpiece out of his, you know! Very impressed.  Breuer’s vocals was something that I was not expecting to hear on this release. Breuer actually pulls this off and believe that he will no doubt inspire kids and adults to sing. Hey he’s got it! Plus on this release he has guest vocalist Brian Johnson (ex AC/DC) to lay down a track on the song “Mr. Rock n Roll” and yes it delivers.  You can look at this as a credibility mover on this one. I think it helps it out to push this release. But the release holds up on it’s own. Johnson just gives this Lamborghini record a high gloss to it.

Overall: 9.5/10 Given that this is in my opinion a crossover release from being a straight up comedy album to a hard rockin’ metal CD this combines all the fruits and nuts from both aisles. It comes together great like a sweet marinated juicy steak. It’s perfectly seasoned. Jim has been at it for years and this is indeed his greatest of all his classics.

FIRST_SIGNAL_osotl_COVER_HICD Review FIRST SIGNAL – One Step Over The Line (Frontiers Music S.R.L. 2016)

FIRST SIGNAL are at it with Harry Hess in the front and unleash a magical release titled “One Step Over The Line.” This is a melodic hard rocking record with some great vibes that trickle throughout this release. “Love run Free” the opening track definitely sets the stage for this release. It is that great throwback sound to the early 80’s. You would definitely feel like you was at a mix up of Foreigner meets Def Leppard. It’s a refreshing sound a vibe to it.

Armed with Producer Dennis Ward this record soars to new lands and such a nice crisp sound. Very creative approach to this one. “Still Pretending” a solid ballad settles the soul and brings an instant smile to your face. It has that melodic and harmonious prowess that really pulls you into it. “Kharma” is a great track and keeps the vibe in-tact from the beginning of the record. Great guitar solo. This album is extremely cohesive, it doesn’t have any songs that just doesn’t belong on this one. “She Is Getting Away” is that power ballad track that bops you upside your head and makes you really listen to the structure of the song and the great vocals, hooky chorus, and strong keyboards. “December Rain” seems to be one of the strongest tracks on this release. The vocals are strong, lyrically a masterpiece, chorus is dead-on, and is just a great song. You’ll be humming along with it by the end of the song, that’s how strong this one is. “Weigh Me In” has to be my favorite track on this release. It has a glorious kind of sound to it. It’s a happy song, and has that anthemic feeling to it. Vocally all you can say is wow. It’s a powerhouse song.

Overall: If you are into the AOR/Arena music and melodic rock music and looking for something that will touch your soul, you need to get FIRST SIGNAL’s “One Step Over The Line.” You will easily be soothed!

ACE FREHLEY & Paul Stanley reunite after 18yrs.

Paul Stanley has joined forces with Ace Frehley for a new track on Frehley‘s upcoming solo covers set. The new album, “Origins Vol. 1”, will be released on April 26, and marks an 18 year absent since the last time the two  KISS co-founders have appeared on an original album together since the band’s 1998 set, “Psycho Circus”.

During an appearance on KBAD 94.5‘s “Morning Crash” radio show, Stanley stated about his new collaboration with Frehley: “Ace was doing an album of covers, songs that influenced him and that he loved, and called me. And it’s always very funny, because with caller ID, I look, and the phone’s ringing, and I see Ace‘s name come up. So, of course… “Look, for all the bickering and stuff that we may say about each other, we go back to a very magical time. We started this together. So in spite of whatever we may say from time to time or things that get blown up, we are a family, and a dysfunctional one, but nonetheless a family.

“So Ace said, ‘Would you do something on the album?’ I said, ‘Sure. Of course.'”

He continued: “If [Ace] succeeds, it only makes me happy. I don’t wanna see anybody fail, especially somebody who I’m close to. Even if I don’t speak to him weekly, even monthly, we are connected in a way that will go to the end.

Ace was asked by Rolling Stone about his teamup with Stanley. Frehley said: “I thought Paul did a fabulous vocal on it. He jumped at the chance to do this because it’s something that’s outside of KISS and his character in KISS, and it gave him a chance to, y’know, sing. With Paul, you usually think of him singing in a slightly higher register and on ‘Fire And Water’, he’s singing deep from his diaphragm, and it’s a real cool vocal. Everyone’s who heard it was just thinks it’s the shit.”

CD Review – FILTER – “Crazy Eyes” (Wind-up Records 2016)

Filter_CrazyEyes_Cover_RGBFilter – Crazy Eyes (Wind-up Records 2016)

The latest release by Filter is planned to drop on April 8th. What to expect in this release? A lot of emotion, reality, and a push back to the roots. Richard Patrick is back at it with Crazy Eyes and this is definitely a strong industrial hypnotic release with full of power and ferocity.

Starting off Crazy Eyes is the track “Mother E” which really sets the stage for this release. It takes you to that hidden place in your head where the emotions are staged and figured out. Lyrically this is phenomenal. It’ll pull you into it. “Nothing in My Hands” is a continuation but the chorus is pretty hooky and is really spot on. “Pride Flag” is another message song which is a strong brewed track with a pretty sweet chorus. “City of Blinding Riots” has some pretty good melodic lines to it. ”Take Me To Heaven” is a pretty exciting track to dive in to. This song has a nice vibe to roll over to mainstream radio. It has a nice drum groove and catchy hooky chorus and pretty sweet riff. “Welcome to the Suck” comes across as an anthemic track. Great build ups. “Head of Fire” the signature bass opening riff lets you know this is a Filter song and has a nice buildup. Bridge build up to the chorus is pretty nice, it’s like an elegant train derailment but it keeps you going with it all the way through. “Tremors” industrial at its best is mostly what I got out of this one. It’s erratic, one of Richard’s best vocal track, and a nice flow to the song. Lyrically, this song has such strong meanings engulfed in it and the message is reached with no problem. “Kid Blue From the Short Bus, Drunk Bus” has a really powerful flow with it. What is lacks in the industrial mix makes up with it in the strong chorus and great lyrics. Really catchy song, one you really melt with and become one with it. “Your Bullets” is a right in your face song. One of the heaviest tracks on this release. Its intense, powerful and great flow make this one of the favored songs on “Crazy Eyes.”  “Under Tongue” starts off with a with a nice pounding piece of drums and bass and then the experimentation begins. Nice progression in this song. “(Can’t She See) Head of Fire, Part 2” delivers the proper ending in this release. This song is an emotional roller coaster ride and doesn’t get heavy but pulls you into it almost as if it was a dream. Pretty interesting to end the release on.

Overall: Filter – “Crazy Eyes” is a strong 8.5 / 10. Gotta love it that Richard Patrick brought back the old Filter vibe. Lyrically this release is a masterpiece. When the songs buildup and unloads it is straight-up genius. It’s an emotional release full of meaning and strong messages.

German power metal force ORDEN OGAN follows up on the success of their latest studio album „Ravenhead“ (which became an international chart success in 2015) with their first ever DVD release. But “The Book Of Ogan”, due out on April 29th, is so much more than that… The package consists of 2 DVDs (running time 6 hours – incl. 2 full Live concerts, extensive band documentary, all music videos & numerous specials) and 2 CDs (“All These Dark Years – The Best Of 2008 – 2015” and the self-released/demo “Testimonium a.d.” from 2004). While the “Best Of” is an exclusive selection of the band’s hits and fan favorites from their four albums, “Testimonium a.d.” is made available for the first time ever as official label release here. It received highest ratings in the demo sections of the leading metal magazines back then and is dealt for up to 500€ (!). „The Book Of Ogan“ comes as deluxe 2DVD/2CD box set (hardcover, separate trays for each disc, 40-pages booklet) and is a must for both longtime followers and new fans!

“Compiling all the material for “The Book Of Ogan” was a huge effort”, band leader Seeb explains. “I have underestimated the dimension of this project completely, to be honest. At first it started with the idea of releasing a Live DVD plus bonus material. Then we wanted to add a “Best Of” CD and finally my idea of producing a “little” documentary about the band’s history became an extensive trip through two decades which resulted in a 90-minutes long piece of work. All the video material appearing in the documentary of course is only a fraction of what we had to go through, select and edit. But also interviews with many former and current Orden Ogan members were filmed especially for this release. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun as well. After everything was finished, we (the band mates) were meeting to watch it as a whole. The result: Laughing out loud but also shaking heads in disbelief.”

For “The Book Of Ogan” two entire concerts were filmed in Germany 2015 (Rockharz festival and a club show in Bamberg). Combined with the extensive documentary, all music videos, additional live clips, making ofs and specials, the DVD content of “The Book Of Ogan” clocks in at almost 6 hours!

Regarding the Live recordings, Seeb states: “To me it doesn’t make sense to rework Live recordings later on in the studio overly. Of course, everything should be mixed properly (and this is what we did), but if there are mistakes in the performance, you should keep it real. Otherwise it’s not “Live””.

By Domonic Rini

Maximum Threshold Radio

“So the gates have been opened to the inferno and unleashed this heavy, dirtiest, most destructive release in years.”

With appearances by Philip H. Anselmo, Charlie Benante, Chuck Billy, D. Randall Blythe, Rex Brown, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, Phil Demmel, David Ellefson, Alissa White-Gluz, Matthew K. Heafy, Gary Holt, Jamey Jasta, Chris Jericho, Andreas Kisser, Misha Mansoor, Mark Osegueda, Tim “Ripper” Owens, dUg Pinnick, Mike Portnoy, Troy Sanders, Cristina Scabbia, Alex Skolnick, Steve “Zetro” Souza and Ben Weinman on this it has to be a vast collection of artist great that will impact the original tracks.   We will dive in to check this out and give you our take on it.

Tracklist / Review

  1. Gift Of Pain (Vocals: D. Randall Blythe Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson
Drums:Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Gary Holt) just by looking at this lineup you kinda get scared at what this would sound like. Well, you are correct it is a hard hitting skull smashing track that will no doubt have you pounding your desk, steering wheel or whatever is next to you. Blythe really give us the deepest growls and Portnoy, well you know what to expect from him.
  2. Let Darkness Fall (Vocals: Troy Sanders Lead, Rhythm & Acoustic Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums & Percussion: Mike Portnoy Additional Bass: Mark Menghi & Rex Brown Additional Screams: D. Randall Blythe) has such a strong powerful riff opening the song and the vocals of Sanders gives it that Sabbathy vibe to it. Song is pretty catchy and the chorus has a nice hook to it. A track you’ll most likely click rewind again and again.
  3. Dying Song (Vocals: Philip H. Anselmo Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: Mark Menghi
Drums:Mike Portnoy) – This one is a pretty straight forward melodic nightmare. Anselmo hits new heights on this one. Pretty damn impressed with this one! Really digging this track. Alex Skolnick leaves his signature sound throughout the track. His little solo’s weave throughout and really brings this song to life. Wow is all I can say about this track!
  4. Can’t Kill The Devil (Vocals: Chuck Billy Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums: Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Phil Demmel & Andreas Kisser) – going into this track I just looked at this lineup and figured, hmmm Chuck Billy singing well its gotta be good, must have a Testament kinda flare. Well if you thought the same thing you were absolutely correct. Pretty impressed with Kisser and Demmel on this one you get that one two punch and of course Skolnick gives you that knock out punch to finish you off. It is a nice heavy track and if you are a fan of Skolnick and Billy than this is a no-brainer to check out. So great powerful solos by Demmel and Kisser as well.
  5. Scars (Vocals: Mark Osegueda & Cristina Scabbia Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick
Bass:David Ellefson Drums: Mike Portnoy) – I was looking forward to this song. With Death Angel’s vocalist on this one it has to be good and Cristina to give it that full sound to it. With Cristina singing on this it gives the song another dimension to it. I nice bounce off each-others vocals. Of course the music is intense and heavy hitting. Pretty impressed with David Ellefson and bringing up the bottom end to this.
  6. Destination: Nowhere (Vocals: Matthew K. Heafy Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums:Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Matthew K. Heafy) – I have been a fan of Matthew Heafy for a while and been friends with the guys from Trivium for years so I knew that looking at him on this track this was going to be a nicely structured vocal song. Heafy hits this track with a deep melodic gymnastics and is all over the place from the highs to the extreme lows and the hook in the chorus really sucks you into it. This would be a good track to hear on terrestrial radio. The solo in the track is right on.
  7. Wait Until Tomorrow (Vocals: dUg Pinnick & Jamey Jasta Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums, Percussion & Additional Vocals: Mike Portnoy) – “Wait Until Tomorrow” is a pretty smooth track, with heavy hitters Pinnick and Jasta on the mic they deliver the good and provide a great detail of heavy sounding vocals. Jasta takes it to extreme as he is known for and Dug of course brings it all together. ¾ of the way through the song it really kicks in and leaves you in awe.
  8. Triangulum        I.  Creation   II. Evolution   III. Destruction (Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums: Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Misha Mansoor, Ben Weinman, Charlie Benante, Phil Demmel, Matthew K. Heafy & Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal) – This song is a nice progression from opener to ending. With a nice middle. There is a lot going on with this song and if you are a guitarist or drummer you will really enjoy this one.
  9. Pledge Of Allegiance (Vocals: Mark Osegueda Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums:Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Charlie Benante, Gary Holt & Andreas Kisser)- an intense track. Osegueda pushes the bar on this one! This track has a really mind blowing fast riff that pulls the song together and makes you smile because of the intensity of it. I think this is geared to be a metal anthem and it does have its strong hooky chorus. Really digging this one. Makes me want to pull out my old Suicidal Tendencies records.
  10. We Rock (Deluxe Edition Only) (Vocals: Mark Osegueda, Chris Jericho, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Alissa White-Gluz, Chuck Billy & Steve “Zetro” Souza Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: David Ellefson Drums:Mike Portnoy Additional Lead Guitar: Andreas Kisser, Phil Demmel & Gary Holt) – closing this release is the Dio cover song “We Rock” with Tim “Ripper” Owens, Mark Osegueda and Chris Jericho rippin the song up, in a good way. It is nice how they weave other vocalist into the song and it is pretty cool to listen to this. Skolnick of course shreds this one. Nice arpeggios and great riffs follow through this solo.

Overall: Wow to really label this with something out of a 10 is tough. You can tell the artists put in their heart and soul into this one and has so much emotion and drive into it. A massive coalition of greatness all on one release. This is a simple overall vibe on this whole release, “Intensity, ferocity, vocal geniuses, guitar gods, and a madman behind the kit” 10 out of 10! I don’t think they could have done this any better than what they did in this release. They hit everything you would have expected out of the artists and it does have a great fluid vibe to it. Make Metal Allegiance part of your collection today! You will not regret it!

“It’s always my pleasure to jam with such esteemed musicians and brothers, and my contribution to this project is further proof of that fact. Hail to all Heavy Metalers the world over!” states Philip H. Aneslmo.

Mike Portnoy adds, “I could not be any more excited or proud of the Metal Allegiance album… it’s everything I’ve always dreamed of and hoped for & 100x more!”

From the blistering opening of album starter “Gift Of Pain” to the final notes of closer “Pledge Of Allegiance,” it is clear this collective have created something special.  The diversity of the individual tracks is apparent through each musical collaboration. The standard edition CD of Metal Allegiance will feature the 9 original songs. A digipak edition will be available that features an all-star tribute to Ronnie James Dio with a cover of his classic song “We Rock” as well as a 45 minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the album. A double vinyl version will also be available that will feature all 10 songs as well.

D. Randall Blythe adds, “When Lamb Of God asked Alex Skolnick to rip a guest solo on ‘Ashes of the Wake’, it was a big deal to us to have one of the legends of our scene play on our record. Much to my amazement, years later he returned the request, and it’s an even bigger deal to me to be asked on a peer level to contribute to a project with so many stellar players. I was honored to be chosen – ‘Gift Of Pain’ rips! Play it LOUD!”

CD Review – Diamond Head – Diamond Head (Dissonance Productions 2016)

The new release that was not to happen actually came to fruition and band founder Brian Tatler stated “I had no interest in doing another record but after working with Ras on the 2014 European tour that suddenly changed.  I wanted to make a record with him.  He’s a confident singer and he’s not trying to fill anyone’s shoes.”  What the self-titled release gives you a throw-back vibe but with a gritty singer. Listening to this release it really makes you listen to the lyrics and the song development. There is nothing thrilly about this release. It is a basic hard rock, riff driven and extremely strong vocally. I can understand by Tatler wanted to put forth the effort of a new release. Seems like a strong chemistry and the vocals indeed pulls everything together. At times the vocals can be overwhelming but it doesn’t pull the songs apart. I found that on the first run of listening to Diamond Head – Diamond Head I did not lose interest in it at all. It kept me wanting to hear what is next. After a few runs I found myself humming along with this release and that is a great thing. It has much potential to be a strong record and to continue to build the name.

What to expect from this release – RIFF RIFF RIFF RIFF RIFF RIFF AND MORE RIFFS!!! Hail to the Riffs! Plus vocally this is a masterpiece. I look forward to more releases with Rasmus down the road. I love that late 70’s guitar riff sounds its raw, enticing and it also reminds me of one of my favorite bands – RIOT.

In the current landscape of heavy metal, many bands focus on image, or having that perfect sounding recording, but most fall short on the total package. The Ritualist, featuring Chad Davis, the mastermind behind underground titans Hour of 13 and Night Magic encompass the sound, passion, and precision of the most skilled surgeon on the bands debut offering.  Chad is a metal workhorse, and a one man wrecking crew when it comes to his vision. Dude can flat out play the shit out of any instrument, and as is the case with Hour of 13, that is once again on display on Hells’s Doom. Vredehammer-Violator-digitalfront-4000x4000.jpgVredehammer is back and with a furey. The second release and “Violator” is a true destructive release. This is an extreme thrash-fest from beginning to end. It is totally unrelentless, and listening to the talent involved in the making of this is really makes you smile.  These Norwegian fellas has a strong history of releasing phenomenal material. Their last release “Vinteroffer” whos was nominated for “metal album of the year” through the Norwegian Grammys.

Knowing the intensity of their last release and criticism of the last one the sophomore release would have to be hard to beat the bar that they have already created.  Make no mistakes “Violator” crushes their last release. The power section of the drummer keeps the music flowing and the riff masters on the strings bleed throughout. Vocally, this is iconically strong and constant. Creative lyrics and melodic lines reign throughout. It may be gravelly but it has that “Anselmo meets Blythe esque” kinda sound to it, which is nice.

Overall: Vredehammer’s “Violator” is a complete package of intensity, ferocity and top notched sound. A must add to your collection. 9/10  – ENJOY!

prongnoabsolutescdPRONG – X -No Absolutes (2016) CD Review

by JeffKiss

I have been a fan of Prong since I saw them open for Ozzy on the , No More Tears  tour, I wanna say in 1992. I had heard their single at the time Unconditional on a college radio station WKNC and was impressed when I saw them live that they were a 3 piece band. (This was before the internet, Google, and all that shit).  Since that concert I have bought all their albums. Some I like more than others. I think Carved into Stone is one of the best metal albums released in the past 10 years. Ruining Live although good, missed the mark with me so I was very anxious to see what the follow up album to that would be.

As a fan for close to 25 years I can honestly say that Prong has delivered a classic. The galloping opening riff of the first track Ultimate Authority sets the mood for the whole album. Without Words is a Prong classic with pounding drums, and the classic Tommy Victor crunchy riff. The opening riff of the title track has kind of an “Unconditional” vibe to it and delivers.

This album is pounding, it is pummeling, it is brilliant. The chemistry of Tommy Victor, Jason Christopher, and Art Cruz is great, as is the recording and the mix of the album. With X- No Absolutes Prong has released one of its best albums. Now expand the tour so I can see this in NJ!

MEGADETH drops on our laps this electrifying album.  MEGADETH has put out a few tracks leading up to the full release of Dystopia. From the first few tracks the media sang great praises. The addition of the newest members to the fold Kiko Loureiro and Chris Adler (Lamb of God) put into this band a fortress of professionalism and credibility. As Jamey Jasta would call Adler “Calves of Steel” you just know that the power is there!

Diving into this release you get the vibe that this is one of those that are filled of political propaganda and thrash.  Well you would be correct. But “Dystopia” is not just your normal thrash. This release is powerful. Mustaine is on top of his game on this one and the wolves are set to feast. This has to be some of his greatest work to date.  His great lyrics control those path of the song and the main riffs which are phenomenal overwhelm the mind.  The thing that really excited me about this release is Kiko’s soloing. It is such a nice opposite sound of Mustaine’s. It is really smooth, melodic and mind-blowing. A perfect fit. It’s not just a chuga chuga shredding solo fest, its emotion and melody sewn and interwoven within. “The Threat is Real” gives you a nice setup for what the release is all about. The title track “Dystopia” is a nice metal possible mainstream song. It is mellower but make no mistake its not a sissy track. Some of the best soloing is in this track. “Fatal Illusion” is that track that makes you feel like you just fell back a good couple decades. Explosive and a nice moshing track. “The Emperor” bleeds Megadeth and great lyrics and is another one of those tracks you want to blast in your car. Plus you’ll make those faces you think Dave is making when he is singing it. “Last Dying Wish” is one of the most powerful tracks off “Dystopia” some great lyrics and the riffs are great to follow along with. Solo’s are blistering.

Overall: This is simple its a 9.5/10 without a doubt. I loved this release from beginning to end. “Its a blistering inferno unloaded to the masses”.

EXUMER – Raging Tides (Metal Blade Records 2016) CD Review

Exumer_-_The_Raging_Tides.jpgEXUMER – Raging Tides (Metal Blade Records 2016)

2016 is starting to pick up steam and the sweet sounds of thrash are starting to fill the air. A nice way to break in a classic band with new material is the German thrash band EXUMER.

Listening to this release is such a nice fall-back to the early thrash days. EXUMER fills this release with the way-back machine with the vibe of early Exodus, Slayer, Mortal Sin, and Overkill. It may have that classical sound to it but make no mistake, “this release is one that delivers a molotov cocktail to your skull”. It is unrelentless, there are no sissy tracks in this release. It’s an ass whipping over and over and over!

One of the items that I enjoy with The Raging Tides is the clever lyrics. It is spit at you and pretty catchy. Kind of funny at times, you’ll get the vibe of what is coming up next. The guitars lines are what you would expect, strong riffs, and real thrashy. There are not a lot of solo’s in this release which is something that would take this release over the top, the solo’s that you get to hear are extremely great and memorable. What is missing in the soloing is made up with the thrashy riffs.

Conceptually and lyrically, vocalist Mem V. Stein has based the bulk of the record around human suffering. Specifically, he adds it is suffering “caused by torture or other means for political, religious, or personal gain for the individuals/organizations who inflict the pain. The album is called “The Raging Tides“, and the title represents the ebb and flow of human misery and despair around the globe.” These topics are obviously not born from a vacuum, rather they are essentially a constant in daily lives in 2015, both by way of the modern 24 hour news cycle, and document leaks and controversy via wikileaks or figures like Edward Snowden. Stein continues: “The lyrics I wrote were inspired by a wide range of books and articles I read, ranging from the investigation of tactics employed by the CIA, to Amnesty International reports on conditions in prisons (Song; Brand of Evil), and in Nigeria (extreme forms of human abuse – Song; Welcome to Hellfire).” Specifics details aren’t necessarily called out in the lyrics, rather the topics are clear for listeners who can read between the lines, so to speak. Another example is the track “Shadow Walker,” that touches on those who leave promising lives to pursue radical ideologies and even death, only to be deceived by those they follow for larger political and personal goals.

Overall : 9/10 . This release will be one you will want to check out. It is powerful, thrash at its roots and not a mellow track. Definitely one that will make you want to mosh around your house or beat the guy up in the passenger seat while you speed down the street blaring EXUMER head banging and pounding your fist in the air.Oh, and did I mention Rob Dukes busting out a track in “Hostage To Heaven”. Super bad ass! Plus the solo will blow your mind!

Brimstone Coven – “Black Magic” (2016 Metal Blade Records) CD Review

Remember the days of anxiously awaiting the release of a new album by your favorite band? Hearing an ad for the bands upcoming release on a station thBrimstone Coven - Black Magicat had the balls to play heavy metal and hard rock. That little taste lit a fire that would not die  until the release was in  hand. In a day where music, especially hard rock and heavy metal has seen the influx of hipster self proclaimed aficionados, where masterful writing and techniques of the past are blatantly ripped off, and everything has to have a label and fit perfectly into a sub genre that exsists or is made up to fit the steaming pile of dung……..Behold Brimestone Coven, and their second Metal Blade Records release “Black Magic.” Continue reading Brimstone Coven – “Black Magic” (2016 Metal Blade Records) CD Review

By Dom Rini (Maximum Threshold Radio)

Don and Jim are back at it again with Terrorizing Telemarketers and giving you more of the knucklehead phone pranks. Just when you think you have heard it all they give you 17 new tracks of insanity.  If you have followed these guys in the past you are definitely in for a treat. Creative conversations between the telemarketers and Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine. The tandem really do a great job twisting the conversations with the telemarketers. DJMonsterofficial.jpg

You will find yourself laughing intensely, especially with the track “Who Me?”, “Ferris Bueller”, “House Alarm”, “Good Day, Bad Day”, “Luke”, “Spastic Colon”, and “Mulejuice.”  I found it hilarious when they use rockers as their names ex. “Danko Jones, Troy Patrick Farrell and Richard Christie.” These guys are such cool guys!

“This is a simple thing, if you are familiar with these guys past works with Terrorizing Telemarketers than you have to get this one. It’s a no-brainer. You will find yourself laughing and how far they will go and how long the telemarketers can stay on the phone with them”

Overall – 10/10

CD Review – Ocean Grid – The Influence of Monsters EP

oceangridCD Review – Ocean Grid – The Influence of Monsters EP

by Dom Rini (Maximum Threshold Radio)

Ocean Grid are one of those bands that bring an impulsive and explosive attack. With a unique blend of melodic hardcore and creative lyrics.  This is one of those bands that if you are into the music of this generation of metal heads than this is right up your alley. With the sounds reminiscent of Memphis Mayfire, Miss May I, Sirens and Sailors, and possibly a little Hatebreed, just to name a few that floats within this EP it is really easy to get lost in the wave of this and that’s a good thing.

What I have noticed in this release is the two very distinct vocalist. The nice sweet vocals singing the melodic lines and then the destructive growls that slither its way into the song. Creative and doesn’t overpower the music and bring it down. Its a nice balance. “The band is extremely tight and the contrast between the vocals and the pounding of the others is really dynamic and precise. A winning combination.”

Overall: this is one of those EP’s that when it is released you need to jump on board and get this release. It definitely will make a great cruising CD.  9.5 / 10

ironaut1Los Angeles, CA groove metal band rolls out this self titled release IRONAUT. What we have here is not your typical groove band. We have before us a band of top notch well seasoned veterans at the helm ready and willing to deal destruction for all who listen.

Listening to Ironaut give you that grooving Sabbathy vibe and great guitar and bass wheeling solos. You will be shaking your head in awe. I guess if you were trying to picture what this band sounded like without hearing them I guess you would have to think of if Lemmy was in Black Sabbath mixed with some Crobot, The Mentors, and Mothership. There is that stoner groove to it but it has a stronger tempo and does not drag down. One of the captivating sounds of this band is the vocals of Erik Kluiber whom really makes this trio sound heavier that what they are. Don’t get me wrong, they are heavy to start off but by Kluiber’s vocals it really pulls it together.

It is easy to give this release a 5/5. It has all the making to really help this band explode.  Great musicians, creative lyrics, and a fiery tempo. It’s not hard to really fall for this band.

Ironaut – Official | FB |

Ironaut has been spawned from the primordeal ooze brewed from the cauldron of riffs conjured by Pat McHugh (formerly of The Sixth Chamber), then transmuted through the sonic rhythmic alchemy of Erik Kluiber (formerly of Overloaded/White Wizzard/Gypsyhawk) and Ivan Najor (formerly of Level).

Originally hailing from Chicago, Pat, along with native Detroiters Erik on bass and Ivan on drums, brings some ballsy Midwestern grit to the streets of Los Angeles.

Disciples of Doom, Stoner, Sludge, Hard Psych, Proto and Classic Metal, Heavy Prog, old school Punk, Thrash, Groove, high octane Rock and Roll, amp worship, drug/counterculture, altered states, cosmic jokes, cold beer, whiskey, weed, and loose women. This is their religion, and the streets shall flow with the blood of the nonbelievers.

Ironaut is on a mission to defy the confining boundaries of adhering to this or that sub genre, and pummel listeners with any and all conceivable means of heavy by balancing the raw and refined, fast and slow, old and new, visceral and cerebral, simple and complex.

Prepare your lungs and livers to behold the impending substance abuse of IRONAUT!
